Apart from the fact that education in New Zealand is heavily subsidized, there are various scholarship opportunities available for international students to study in this island nation. These scholarships are offered by the New Zealand government as well as respective universities. Here are few scholarships which are offered by the government:
Commonwealth Scholarships: The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth nations.
The CSFP was established in 1959 and is the only scholarship scheme in the world to receive such high level recognition. The New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programmes and managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
India being a part of the Commonwealth nations avails such scholarships for candidates wishing to pursue postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) in New Zealand universities and colleges on a contestable basis. New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are extremely competitive for prime level graduates.
In India, the nominating agencies are Director General of Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Deputy Educational Adviser of Ministry of Human Resource Development. Commonwealth scholarship awardees can study in University of Otago, University of Waikato, University of Canterbury, Victoria University of Wellington, Massey University, (AUT) Auckland University of Technology and Lincoln University.
New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship: (NZIDRS) The New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship is administered by Education New Zealand, andit is a Government funded scholarship, . The scholarship aims to draw in and retain the most effective international researchers to New Zealand. The scholarship provides full tuition fees and a living stipend for a complete of 3 years.  The NZIDRS covers the following for a TOTAL of 3 years (thirty six months): New Zealand University annual tuition fees and associated student levies, An annual living stipend of NZ dollar tweenty five thousand per year(NZ$25,000) (tax free), Medical insurance coverage up to NZ dollar six hundred (NZ$600) annually.
Reserve Bank of New Zealand University Scholarship: Reserve Bank of New Zealand University Scholarship is offered by Reserve Bank of New Zealand to honours, masters or PhD. final year students of economics, finance or banking.The scholarship of ten thousand NZ dollar ($10,000) is paid fortnightly during an academic year. Students with average B+ grade are eligible for the scholarship. Students entering first year of University are not eligible for this scholarship.
The awardees of scholarship are needed to figure with Reserve Bank of New Zealand for a selected period after completion of the educational year otherwise they need to repay the scholarship given.
